Getting Rid of Old Power Tool Batteries?

If you’ve gone through your tools and found that you need to dispose of a few old rechargeable tool batteries, think before you toss. Because many batteries from cordless power tools contain heavy metals, most trash haulers won’t accept them. Instead of risking damage to the environment and a very frustrated trash collector, here are a few simple steps to getting rid of your power tool batteries properly.

First, locate a drop off site for your batteries by contacting Call2Recycle, a national collection program that works with retail stores like Target and Home Depot to dispose of batteries properly. You can visit their site at Call2Recycle.org or give them a ring at 800-8-Battery. Once you’ve figured out the right drop off site, give the business a call to find out where exactly to take your batteries and to see if there are any specific instructions. This will save you time from waiting in line at the info desk and can help you make the drop off even easier.

If you don’t have a nearby Call2Recyle approved site and need to get rid of your old power tool batteries safely, feel free to contact your local department of sanitation. They may be able to point you to a program they work with or a collection spot that can accept rechargeable batteries.

Easy Ways to Organize Your Workbench

Jun 29, 2009

With warmer weather comes the chance to complete those projects you’ve been putting off for the past few months. But as your workshop or work bench becomes more cluttered, it’s important to think about how you can organize your work space to make it easier, more efficient, and safer as you work through your to-do list for the season. To help you out, Tools-Plus.com offers these easy tips:

For Your Tools

One of the easiest ways to avoid digging through your tool box to find the right equipment is to install a peg board above your workbench with spots for each of your most commonly used tools. The rest you can store away neatly in a tool box or set of drawers.

For Your Screws, Nuts, Bolts, etc.

Make your screws, paper clips, pens, nuts, bolts, and nails easy to find and safely stowed away by organizing them in a few large glass jars. Attach a label for an even neater workspace.

For Your Bits and Blades

Let your drawers be a safe haven for bits and blades that can often get lost, become damaged, or cause harm when stored improperly. Be sure to organize them neatly to avoid accidental injury.

Porter Cable 7424 VS. 7424XP Polisher / Buffer

Jun 20, 2009

OK, you have been a fan of the Porter Cable 7424 Polisher for years and now you find out it has been replaced with the Porter Cable 7424xp – What should you do? Well, if you still love the feel and design of the Original Tried and True Porter Cable 7424, you better get one quick, because once they are gone, they are gone. The new XP Model does have more Amps 4.5 vs. 4.0 and goes up to 6,800 RPM’s versus 6,000 RPM’s on the older model, however, you might be surprised at the differences in the body design. The length of the actual body of the 7424XP polisher unit itself, is 1″ longer than the original (11″ vs. 10″). The new Polisher is also slightly heavier than the original 7424. Also, the air vents, variable speed dial, and screw holes are located on the handle or body of the XP model where your hand may be while operating the unit. In contrast, the original 7424 air vent, variable speed dial and screw are located at the base of the unit and your hand does not touch any controls while operating the unit.

Both of these random orbital action (also called dual action) polishers are ideal for use as a boat polisher or a car polisher due to their ease of use and because they will not burn your paint as can happen with a rotary polisher.

So if you want to get the last of a classic now is the time to order a Porter Cable 7424 Polisher.

New Biesemeyer Rail and Tube

Jun 1, 2009

Q:

Will the New Delta 78-138B 36″ Biesemeyer Rail and Tube and the Delta 78-055B 52″ Biesemeyer Rail and Tube work on the older Delta saws.

Biesemeyer Rail and Tube

A:

This rail kit will work on older saws. The two holes in the new and old tables are only different by a couple of thousandths and the user may not have to do any drilling. If drilling is required, it is a simple job. Although there are basic similarities, the New UniSaw and the Beisemeyer Fence system are completely redesigned. Differences include that front tube is now extruded and not steel, the table of the saw is bigger, so the Biesemeyer fence is longer. Because the table is longer the tableboard will not fit older shorter tables on old UniSaw or Contractor Saws.

If you would like to use this rail kit with an older saw the older Biesemeyer Universal table boards will work as long as you drill the mounting holes through the table board.

If you want to be assured of a proper fit for your older model UniSaw the Delta BC30 30″ and the Delta BC50 50″ Biesemeyer Commercial Fence systems are an excellent choice and will not require any special effort to work with your current saw.
