Contractors Vs. DIY: Which is Better for Your Project?

Mar 20, 2009

As times are tough, more homeowners are looking to do their own home improvements without the help of contractors. While in some situations this may prove to be smart savings, in others, it’s a sure fire way to add frustration, expense, and agony to your project. Some people just may reap the most benefits by hiring a contractor. So which is better for you?

When you start projects that you’ve never done before, it’s really easy to get in over your head. Most TV home improvement shows tend to make things look easy, when in reality; it may pose a greater challenge. To determine whether or not you’re up to the task, try testing out a small portion of your project or attending a class at your local home improvement center.

Another great idea is to research and flesh out all the details before starting to look at how-to guides. Check out material costs, what Power Tools you may need, and how long the project could take. If you don’t think you can hack it without making a mistake or becoming terribly frustrated, hire a contractor. Feel good? Try your DIY project.

Remember too, these are tough times for contractors, so be sure to shop around to see if you’re getting the best deal. You never know, it could actually end up being a lot easier to hire a contractor at a great price than to do it yourself only to save a few bucks but end up with a weekend-long headache.

Kenseth and DeWalt Team – Las Vegas

DeWalt #17

Las Vegas, a city known for the best and worst of luck, dealt Kenseth a bad hand on Sunday.  The DeWalt/USG Ford Fusion experienced major engine trouble and was relegated to a 43rd place finish.  Right off the start, Kenseth experienced a rumble underneath the hood and the crew went to work right away.  Using quality DeWalt Tools, they went to work under the hood and found nothing wrong.  However, less than 3 laps later, the call came over the radio to pack it up and the motor let loose in a billowing cloud of smoke, oil and random parts.

Kenseth, driving for Roush/Fenway, became the first person since Jeff Gordon in 1997 to sweep both opening races of the season.  Kenseth drove the DeWalt car to a rain-shortened victory in the Daytona 500 and took the Carhartt car to a dominating win at California speedway.  However, the team struggled from when they unloaded the car and knew they had a monumental task in front of them if they were going to make NASCAR history.  After finishing 45th out of 51 cars in practice and qualifying 40th for the race, Kenseth was optimistic but the car would not cooperate.

Kenseth was obviously disappointed as the DeWalt team has won twice at Las Vegas; however it was not in the cards this year.  Says Kenseth: “”It’s never really easy. We didn’t even really get to race today, and we qualified bad, so it was a pretty long weekend for nothing. It’s disappointing no matter what. I’m glad we did great the last two weeks, but really, you take it one week at a time and shift your focus to that race each and every week.”  The DeWalt team is already looking forward to the next event; the Kobalt Tools 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway, where Kenseth has 11 career top 10 finishes.
