Coastal deposits Coastal deposits, as distinct from the 'terrestrial' gravels described above, accumulate near the margins of permanent water bodies, between the lowest low tide mark and the top of the storm beach, as the result of wave action on the rocky or debris-strewn shores of large lakes, estuaries and the sea. Some material derived by denudation from land areas may be deposited near a coast, the coarse fraction contributing to beach shingle, where the energy of breaking waves will tend to build a storm beach above normal high water level (Fig.
