The meeting, they all hoped, would resolve these tensions. The Team Meeting The meeting took place in New York City in a conference room at the main printing plant. m. meeting the next morning. He felt somewhat put out and annoyed; he had to take an extra day away from his family, and no one that he worked closely with on a day-to-day basis would be at the meeting.

Linda Wood, a young hardworking front-line manager, was tapped to lead this group. Linda had spent her whole career at Cleveland and approached her work in the formal way that was the Cleveland culture. She felt comfortable with the structure and rules of a large corporation. Linda was proud of her team, especially the guidelines and processes they created for usercentered design within the Cleveland Company. Linda’s group initially focused on workplace issues, but after a few years the management team realized they should be doing research as well.

Mark agreed but wanted to have his engineers build the prototype. Jim explained, “It would be faster to have a dedicated UI designer do this, so the engineers can focus on back end issues while the UI design work goes on in parallel. ” Mark was intrigued but remained unconvinced. Jim went off to prepare his presentation. He started to describe what a full UCD process would look like and quickly realized that this would be inappropriate for the situation. He had explained his vision to many of those who would be in the audience during prior meetings and remembered most of them thought he was being unrealistic.
